The Huawei office in Sweden is the leading overseas R&D office in Huawei, and the Wireless Network Algorithm Lab at Huawei Sweden drives innovation for the Huawei Wireless RAN product. We work on both advanced transceivers and on Radio Resource Management algorithms, for 5.5G or 6G.
About This Opportunity:
We are seeking an experienced and visionary Lab Director to lead our Wireless Network Algorithms Laboratory. This role demands a unique blend of deep technical expertise in wireless communication systems, proven leadership in managing high-performing teams, and the ability to bridge cutting-edge research with real-world industrial applications. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in both academia and industry, driving innovation while ensuring the lab’s work aligns with global technological advancements and business needs.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Strategic Leadership & Team Management:
- Define and execute the lab’s strategic vision, focusing on advanced wireless communication algorithms (e.g., 5G/6G, AI/ML-driven optimization).
- Lead, mentor, and grow a multidisciplinary team of researchers, engineers, and academic collaborators.
- Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and excellence, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
- Manage lab resources, budgets, and infrastructure to maximize research impact and operational efficiency.
2. Research & Development Excellence:
- Oversee groundbreaking research in wireless network algorithms, ensuring outputs are published in top-tier journals and conferences.
- Translate academic research into industrial solutions by collaborating with product teams, telecom partners, and stakeholders.
- Stay ahead of industry trends (e.g., 5.5G/6G evolving techs, AI/ML integration) and guide the lab’s technical roadmap.
3. Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Build partnerships with universities, research institutions, and industry leaders to secure funding and joint projects.
- Act as the lab’s ambassador at global conferences, standards bodies, and innovation forums.
- Facilitate knowledge transfer between academia and industry to accelerate commercialization of research outcomes.
4. Operational & Quality Governance:
- Ensure compliance with ethical standards, intellectual property management, and safety protocols.
- Monitor research quality and impact through regular reviews, audits, and performance metrics.
- Identify skill gaps and design training programs to upskill team members on emerging technologies.
5. Stakeholder Engagement & Reporting:
- Prepare and present progress reports to senior leadership, highlighting key achievements and ROI.
- Engage with internal stakeholders (e.g., product, engineering, DevOps) to align lab priorities with business needs.
- Secure external grants, sponsorships, and partnerships to expand the lab’s capabilities and influence.
Qualifications:
- PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications, or a related field.
- 10+ years of hands-on experience in wireless communication systems, with expertise in areas like signal processing, network optimization, or AI/ML for wireless networks.
- 5+ years of leadership experience managing technical teams in both academic and industrial settings (e.g., research labs, R&D departments).
- Strong publication record in reputed journals/conferences (e.g., IEEE, ACM) and patents in wireless technologies.
- Proven success in securing funding (grants, industry partnerships) and delivering large-scale research projects.
- Deep understanding of wireless standards (3GPP, IEEE), simulation tools (MATLAB, NS-3), and industrial practices.
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex concepts to diverse audiences.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience in commercializing research (e.g., spin-offs, licensing agreements).
- Familiarity with telecom industry ecosystems (e.g., Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia) and open-source initiatives.
